I’ve always found it weird to have a mission statement for my business, and not for my family.
But then again, is it weird to have a mission statement for a family? Feels so formal.
I asked the community at Terkel whether they have a mission statement for their family, and if so, what’s the motto.

Raise Abundant and Compassionate Humans
For most of my life, my family has had no sort of mission statement, but recently that all changed. After discussing what was most important to us and how we wanted our family dynamic to be, we could come up with a brief statement that defines our role in the world. Our mission statement is simple yet meaningful: “To Raise Abundant and Compassionate Humans.”
It encapsulates our dedication to teaching empathy and service whenever we can, as well as giving our children the room to grow their own dreams and ambitions. We firmly believe that by providing these outlooks, we are setting them up for a successful and fulfilling life!

Always Strive to Be Truthful and Fair
Ever since I was a very young girl, my parents always told me that a person is as good as their word and that it's crucial to have a strong sense of integrity. Being truthful and fair no matter what has always been something they emphasized heavily, and although it took me a while, I now wholeheartedly believe that everyone could benefit from such a mission statement.

A family mission statement can be a powerful tool to guide members of the household through their daily lives and set them on the path toward achieving common goals.
An example is to include an emphasis on quality time—meaning setting aside scheduled, meaningful moments each week where everyone takes part in activities planned in advance.
By setting these expectations, family members can ensure that they're taking time every week to focus on each other and use it as an opportunity to learn more about themselves and their relationships with one another.

Decide as a Family
Decide as a family that you won't be concerned with whether your family mission statement "sounds good" or "looks right" before you consider it. Crafting your family this statement is where the actual magic happens; in reality, the final product is less significant than the overall undertaking.
You will have the chance to have in-depth, meaningful conversations with your wife and children about what is truly important in life while you are preparing the document. When you listen to one another with empathy, you'll have the ability to connect as a family.
Your wife and kids will have more faith in you as a husband and father as you communicate your goals for your family with them, as well as the morals and values you believe should govern the household. Likewise, as you hear your family members express their opinions, your faith in them will grow. Merely having a family talk about values will help your kids consider these things in their daily lives.
