When I first learned about ChatGPT, I turned to my friend who obtained his PhD in Natural Language Processing and used to work in Google’s Search team for his thoughts. I asked him how concerned he thought Google was with ChatGPT. Was it the biggest threat they’ve faced since 2004? Would it disrupt the current web and force us all into Web3 with attestation and attribution? Or, would the hype fade eventually and become just another tool marketers use for different purposes?
Overall, my friend thought that the recent improvements on text generation were pretty mind-blowing. He hadn’t worked in search for several years, but his initial reaction was to check two things with ChatGPT when it came to search:
- Is it good with tail queries, and can it answer uncommon questions?
- Is it good at reasoning?
My friend reasoned that if it’s only good at head queries (popular questions), then he would doubt that ChatGPT in a GPT-3 form was going to replace traditional search.
For example, searching for what a particular company does may make it difficult for ChatGPT to provide any information.
Which, led me to submit my first prompt into ChatGPT to test reasoning. Reasoning is something search can struggle with. And as it turns out, there’s a nice test for this called the Winograd Schemas.
Here’s the first questions I input into ChatGPT to see if it passed the Winograd Schema test.

Then I proceeded with the bedtime story prompts. But the above were the first prompts I input into ChatGPT. .

When asking this question, I wanted to see if ChatGPT would give me a unique response than the typical answer you could find by searching the Internet. The response was generic. However, it was constructed well and included all the basics for financial money management. ChatGPT recommended: Make a budget, reduce debt and expenses, save, invest, and seek help. ChatGPT would be a helpful starting point for writing an article or finding an answer to a particular question you may have.
