Lessons from a First-Year IT Startup in Houston

Starting an IT consulting firm in a city like Houston—a global powerhouse for energy, healthcare, and professional services—is an exercise in humility. When I founded Cocha Technology Inc., the vision was to provide a high-level strategic umbrella for technical infrastructure. While our subsidiary, Wander Web Studio, has seen great success in high-performance web development, the core mission of Cocha has always been about something deeper: building resilient, compliant foundations for the industries that power our economy.

In our first year, we’ve learned that growth is rarely a straight line. We’ve faced the classic “feast and famine” cycles that many new consulting firms navigate. There have been seasons where we were heads-down in technical execution—securing our SBE certification with the City of Houston or optimizing data loss prevention (DLP) strategies—only to realize we hadn’t spent enough time on the next phase of client acquisition.

However, these trials forced us to refine what we call the “Architect’s Perspective.” We realized that our most impactful work happens at the intersection of technology and regulation. Whether we are managing the strict confidentiality requirements for Law Firms, navigating the complex operational technology of Oil and Gas, or ensuring the rigorous compliance standards for Medical Device Manufacturers, the stakes are incredibly high. These sectors don’t just need “IT support” they need a partner who understands that a single security lapse or system downtime can have catastrophic consequences.

Our success at Cocha Technology hasn’t come from a single “big break.” It has come from the small, daily wins: the persistence it takes to troubleshoot a complex technical hurdle, the late nights spent drafting long-term security roadmaps, and the willingness to be transparent with our community.

For fellow entrepreneurs and investors, my biggest takeaway is this: Your structure should reflect your vision. By positioning Cocha Technology as the strategic lead, we can look at a client’s business from 30,000 feet, ensuring their infrastructure is as robust as their ambition. In the world of startups, the technical stack is the “how,” but the trust you build in specialized, high-stakes sectors is the “why” that creates a lasting brand.
