Iowa has been on my bucket list for the last four years.
I’ve been to 49 out of 50 states. Iowa is the last one.
For years I’ve wanted to knock it out in style through a cross-state bike ride called RAGBRAI. RAGBRAI selects 7 cities across the state of Iowa and invites 10,000+ bike riders to ride from the western most Iowan city to the eastern most city. From what I’ve heard, it’s fun. And for years, I’ve tried to recruit a brave friend to join me.
I haven’t had any takers, and I was tired of not accomplishing the things I really want to accomplish in life. So, I booked my ticket to RAGBRAI and will be riding across the state of Iowa in a couple of months. Bucket list item, here I come.
I’m curious what is on other bucket lists in 2023, so I asked Terkel. Here’s a few unique answers I received to my question.
What is on Your Bucket List for 2023?
From getting that tattoo to starting a garden, here are seven answers to the question, “Can you share a few achievable things that have been on your bucket list for the last two years?”
- Finally Getting a Tattoo
- Completing My Professional Certification
- Starting a YouTube Channel
- Traveling to a Different Continent
- Writing a Children’s Book
- Learning a New Language
- Growing Heirloom Vegetables
Finally Getting a Tattoo
The idea of getting a tattoo has been on my mind for quite a while, and while nothing really kept me from going for it, I just kept postponing it. I was always able to find one or two arguments why it wasn’t the time for it and that the money I’d invest in it could be spent better at that time. Now that I’m convinced it’s time, it’s just a matter of deciding on the design.

Completing My Professional Certification
For the past two years, I have been working on completing my Accredited Financial Counselor certification. It has multiple components to achieve the certification, requiring me to pass a test, get 1,000 counseling hours, and get other professional documents that must be certified.
I started the journey in 2021, and I’m well on my way to completing all the requirements before the end of 2023. As a general rule of thumb, I write all of my goals and ensure that I create a timeline of when I want to achieve the goal of staying on track.

Starting a YouTube Channel
For a couple of years now, I’ve been meaning to start a YouTube channel. It’s one of those things that sound fun and interesting but requires a lot of work. And who’s to know whether anything will come from it?
But at the same time, this is a perfectly achievable goal (I just have to do it) and I am a firm believer in goals and going after what you want, so I actually am working on launching my channel in the next couple of months.

Traveling to a Different Continent
One achievable thing that has been on my bucket list for the last two years is to take a long vacation and travel to a different continent. I have always wanted to experience different cultures and foods and meet people from other places away from home.
I know that taking some time off work and exploring the world will be a refreshing and rewarding experience. I look forward to immersing myself in the new environment, learning about the history and culture of the places I visit, and creating lasting memories. Life is short, and I believe that traveling to a different continent is an adventure that’s worth taking. You may also want to get in touch with companies like Jettly and book a private jet for your international travel.

Writing a Children’s Book
For the last couple of years, I have had aspirations of writing and creating a children’s book. Although I still haven’t gotten around to actually finishing it, I have started work on it piece by piece. Putting this project into motion requires research, hours of writing, and pushing through the times when inspiration seems out of reach. Even so, it’s something achievable, and I’ll work hard to make it happen.

Learning a New Language
An achievable thing that has been on my bucket list for the last two years is to learn a language. One inclusive example, I have taken up the challenge of learning sign language.
Sign language provides deaf individuals with an opportunity to express themselves, but all too often, it is omitted from our educational systems. Learning a new language can be daunting at first and requires dedication and commitment in order to reach a conversational level; however, it can also be extremely rewarding.
I hope that by mastering sign language, I will gain invaluable life experience and also be able to provide support for people within the community who cannot communicate verbally.

Growing Heirloom Vegetables
Growing a variety of heirloom vegetables in my garden has been a realistic goal of mine for the past two years as a gardener. Open-pollinated vegetable cultivars known as “heirlooms” have been handed down through the years and are prized for their distinctive flavors, hues, and forms.
By cultivating them, I may contribute to the preservation of this significant aspect of our agricultural legacy, which often has a rich history and cultural importance. I have spent the last two years looking into and choosing heirloom types that are ideal for my growing environment and culinary preferences.
As many heirloom types need fertile soil to grow, I have also been striving to enhance the soil quality in my garden. Even though cultivating heritage vegetables can occasionally be difficult, it is also immensely gratifying. Growing heirloom vegetables is one way I can support efforts to preserve our agricultural heritage and promote biodiversity since I am an avid gardener.
